Valerie M. Henderson

President
Tau Omega Chapter
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®

2024 - 2026

Greetings!

As the 38th President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Tau Omega Chapter, I am excited to welcome you to our chapter’s official website!

I have the honor of serving as Tau Omega Chapter President and leading a remarkable and diverse group of women for 2024-2025 under the banner, “Serving Harlem, The Sisterly Way!”

Tau Omega Chapter has a rich legacy of sisterhood and service that began in Harlem, New York, in May 1925. As the oldest graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha in the New York metropolitan area, and the fourth oldest graduate chapter in the Notable North Atlantic Region, Tau Omega’s members have implemented numerous service projects and held leadership positions that have helped shape the Harlem community.

Tau Omega joins more than 1,000 chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha worldwide in bringing to fruition the vision of our 31st International President, Danette Anthony Reed, under the 2022-2026 program initiative, “Soaring to Greater Heights of Service & Sisterhood”.

We are tasked with executing the six international program focus areas:

  1. Strengthen Our Sisterhood

  2. Empower Our Families

  3. Build Our Economic Wealth

  4. Enhance Our Environment

  5. Advocate For Social Justice

  6. Uplift Our Local Community

In addition, we provide engaging, empowering, and intentional chapter-specific programs and activities that are geared toward the diverse needs of the Harlem community, which include Books for Babies at Harlem Hospital, Days of Cheer at the Harlem Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, sponsorship of the AKA Spirits Little League Team, and the annual MLK Day of Service Care Packages.

Tau Omega also raises funds for various causes such as the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and the AIDS Walk New York.

We are a chapter of resolute and resilient women who understand the importance of leading with kindness, a heart of gratitude and an urgency to serve.

Through our Doris R. Conner LeadHERship Boot Camp and Louise Gaither LeadHERship AKAdemy, we work diligently to develop our leadership skills and mentor our members while creating a safe space where all Alpha Kappa Alpha sisters are welcome, valued, and encouraged to serve.

Tau Omega members range in age from 24-90 and represent the fields of media, law, education, healthcare, public safety, real estate, social services, entrepreneurship, administration, accounting, information technology, and other professional careers.

As we approach our Centennial Celebration in 2025, we encourage you to learn more about our chapter’s rich history, upcoming events, and programs.

We also hope you’ll connect and engage with us online via our Facebook and Instagram platforms.

We appreciate your continued support and thank you for visiting our website!

Sincerely,

Valerie M. Henderson, President
